Owl Occasions at Bristol Uni
14th March 2022
Owl Occasions with Birds of Prey Discovery spent a great day at Bristol University helping with a morning and afternoon session about Barn Owl pellet dissection and the diversity of small mammals and birds caught as prey.
The students were kept amused by Loki the male Barn Owl, Flo the female Barn owl and TinTin the female Kestrel. Their flying antics in the lab demonstrated the different flight modes and hunting habits of Owls v Falcons. During the flying demo, the students were told about the special features of the Barn owl which make it such an efficient small mammal hunter whilst Paul and I watched to see where they would fly next! After the flying demo, we walked around allowing the students to get up and personal to our birds whilst they carried out their pellet dissection. The pellets had the usual Vole bones as well as those of Shrews a few birds and unusually a Mole skull and bones. A great day was had by all and some of the demonstrators showed us pictures of us from 8 years ago when they were students and we did the presentation for them at Uni!
